Going Beyond Print Media

Traditional publication techniques restrict the viewer’s access of computer aided designs (CAD) to static displays which cannot capture more intricate details available to interactive representations. This is critical with respects to instrument development documentation, which greatly benefits from the user’s ability to rotate and view a part in 3D space. Interactive digital publications are vital to solving this problem.

Using Interactive 3D PDFs

To supplement the paper versions of my dissertation, I’ve created this project to host the 3D interactive PDFs of instrument modules and components that I’ve built during my PhD at Yale University. They are available for download below, along with a brief overview of the file’s contents. CAD files can also be provided upon request. Please note, 3D PDF functions only work on Adobe Reader, and the 3D features must be enabled. Viewing through a web browser such as Chrome does not support 3D functions.

Gridless Detection Assembly

Yale University’s cryogenic ion vibrational mass spectrometer detection region module. Designed with two gridless ion mirrors and  a central pulsed turning quadrupole.

Reflectron (Ion Mirror)

Iterative designs of the gridless reflectron assemblies. These devices couple ion mirror technology with Einzel lenses and deflectors to properly manipulate the ion packets.

Low/High Energy Quadrupole Ion Bender

Quadrupole ion bender designed with a flexible mounting scheme to allow for floating the deflector rods and housing voltages in low and high energy ion applications.

Designed for small turbo pumps and used to control vacuum speeds often applicable in experiments that require collisional gas control.

Linear translation ion detector used for diagnostics and ion alignment applications. Its flexible design allows for mounting in a variety of locations along the instrument ion path.

Translational mirror mount assembly, built with a stepper motor to automatically move optics in coarse and fine linear motions.
